The UAE and Omani governments are set to introduce a new e-gateway system designed to make the immigration process at the Oman-UAE border easier and quicker, Muscat Daily has reported. Project Aabar, under which a micro-chipped card with details of the traveller will be used, is expected to be implemented next year at the Hatta crossing. “The new immigration system is currently being implemented by the general directorate of residency and foreigners affairs, Dubai,” UAE official told the daily. Under the new system, travellers will not be required to step out of their cars as the system will capture their info through radio frequency identification, the official said.

Kurt Ritter, president and chief executive of the Rezidor Hotel Group has said the firm has seen the delay of four out of 14 hotels in the pipeline for the Middle East, Gulf News has reported. A Park Inn property in Egypt, two hotels in Saudi Arabia and one in the UAE are delayed, Ritter said. In light of the Eurozone crisis, the company is shifting its focus to the growing Middle East where it hopes to achieve about 65% occupancy across its properties, he said. “Now there is oversupply and it’s not wise to take any commitments there [in Europe], so we are looking at the Middle East, Africa and Russia, that is our strategy for the time being.”

According to a report by DTZ Research, the 60% salary increase for Qatari employees in the public sector seems to have brightened the prospects of residential sales, especially in the Pearl-Qatar and within the Diplomatic district, Gulf Times has reported. During the first half of 2011, sales activity remained limited, with average freehold prices (in the Pearl-Qatar) stabilising at QR11,000 per sq m and the second half recorded improved sales activity and greater optimism from potential purchasers/investors, DTZ said, adding that trend has continued over the first quarter of 2012. “In addition, local banks are now offering more favourable financing terms and the Pearl-Qatar has become an established and successful residential location,” it said, highlighting that residential sales at the Pearl dominated the freehold market.
